SFA News
A group of 19 SFA students traveled to Sheridan, Arkansas to compete in the collegiate portion of the 33rd Annual Arkansas State Lumberjack competition. We competed against the University of Arkansas at Monticello, Louisiana Tech, and Southern Illinois University in five physical events, winning four of them and taking the overall championship with 23 points. LaTech came in second with 17, UAM placed 3rd with 15, and SIU finished last with 13. Detailed results are below. ATCOFA alumnus, past Sylvans president, and Arkansas State House of Representatives member Ken Bragg officiated the competition, which was organized by ATCOFA alumnus Karl Hansen among others. A number of SFA alumni were on hand, and enjoyed talking with the students and watching them compete. The students represented our College well, and were very professional.
1st – Crosscut – Zack Ovelgonne & Brody Capps – Zack and Brody cut in 7.66 seconds, besting the LaTech team of Ben and Derrick Moore, identical twins who won the event at Conclave in March, by only 0.11 seconds.
1st – Jack & Jill Crosscut – Kirbee Bowman & Zack Ovelgonne – Kirbee and Zack’s time of 7.72 seconds on a 11 inch round sweetgum beat all the other collegiate competitors by more than 3 seconds.
1st – Single Buck – Zack Ovelgonne – Zack cut in a time of 17.44 seconds, nearly 4 seconds faster than his winning time last year, and 0.05 seconds faster than the fastest professional.
1st – Underhand Chop – Zack Ovelgonne – Zack split the 11 inch sweetgum round in 1:47.70, narrowly edging SIU’s time of 2:05.29.
3rd – Axe Throw – Sean Hoes – Sean scored 9 points, tying for 3rd. He then placed 3rd outright in a run-off with SIU. UAM won with 11 points, and LaTech placed 2nd with 10.
Other students on the team in Arkansas included Katie Adams, John-Mike Arnett, Curtis Daugherty, Ian Erickson, Mark Gonzalez, Jared Herman, Jamie Hooker, Megan Knippers, Chris Longman, David Peterson, Rebeca Rodriguez, Rachel Sanders, and Hope Shannon.
Notes
Thanks to the fine folks at Timberfest in Sheridan, Arkansas for inviting the Sylvans to compete each year!
Competitions generally use lathed sweetgum rounds, with sizes apparent in the photos. Time starts with a signal rather than when the teeth of the saw move. Teams may enter either two women or two men in double-buck crosscut sawing. A starter cut is used for single buck usually. Axe throw has more scoring rings than at Conclave, with a seltzer can that must be popped for a bullseye to count. Competitors get four throws, top three count. Bowsaw (some years) is on a lower cant holder than Conclave. Scoring awards 5 points for a winning team, 4 for second place, etc. regardless of number of colleges competing. Otherwise rules are very similar to Conclave.
