A group of six students competed at the Ouachita County Fair in Camden, Arkansas at the inaugural Lumberjack Match on Saturday, September 23, 2017. The University of Arkansas at Monticello Forestry Club did a fantastic job organizing and running the event. The Sylvans took first place with 23 points, followed by UAM with 19 points and Louisiana Tech with 12 points. Our students were professional and did an excellent job representing ATCOFA.

1st Place, Crosscut Sawing – Women: Katie Adams and Crystal ‘Alex’ Alexander cut in 6.75 seconds on an 8 x 8 sweetgum cant, besting UAM by 1.00 seconds.

1st Place, Log Chopping: Brody Capps split a 10 x 10 sweetgum cant in 2:13.37 (min:sec), besting UAM by 23 seconds.

1st Place, Crosscut Sawing – Single Buck: Ian Erickson cut a 18 inch round sweetgum log in 1:06.31 (min:sec), besting UAM by 34 seconds. Usually this event is on similar sized white pine, which is MUCH softer. Ian is a timberbeast.

1st Place, Knife Throwing: Mark Gonzalez scored 6 points on 5 throws in his first competition. Mark was the sole environmental science major on the team.

1st Place, Bowsawing – Women: Crystal ‘Alex’ Alexander cut in 19.37 seconds on an 8 x 8 sweetgum cant. Her time not only beat UAM and LaTech’s women, but also their men… pretty good considering Alex first attempted bowsaw on Tuesday last week.

1st Place, Bowsawing – Men: Ian Erickson won handily in 10.87 seconds on an 8 x 8 sweetgum cant, about half the time of any other competitor.

2nd Place, Crosscut Sawing – Jack & Jill: Katie Adams and John-Mike Arnett cut in 11.20 seconds on a 10 x 10 sweetgum cant after recovering from sticking the saw at the beginning of their cut.

2nd Place, Axe Throwing: Ian Erickson scored 4 points in the main round and 7 points in the second-third place tiebreaker round, which he won. UAM won the event with 10 points.

3rd Place, Crosscut Sawing – Men: Brody Capps and John-Mike Arnett cut in 11.25 seconds on a 10 x 10. They had to react quickly when the cookie broke mid-cut. UAM won in 7.41 seconds.

Every student on the trip competed.

Notes

Thanks to the fine folks at the Ouachita County Fair in Camden, Arkansas, especially Keith and Justin Ballard, for inviting the Sylvans to compete both years!

Competitions pretty much followed Conclave rules, and the Arkansas Forestry Club got some great sweetgum for each of these events! The one addition was single-buck, on Stihl-sized wood, except that it was sweetgum and not eastern white pine!
