In our first post-COVID competition, we didn't have many in attendance, and decided crowding in on the cant holders per usual wasn't the best idea.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Following more than a year hiatus in competing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stephen F. Austin State University timbersports team, the Sylvans, made a triumphant return during the Louisiana Forest Festival, winning the collegiate portion of the event’s timbersports competition.
“Our team did a great job representing SFA and our programs,” said Dr. Jeremy Stovall, professor of forestry and Sylvans faculty advisor.
The team took first-place in the Jack and Jill crosscut, ax throwing, log chopping and single buck crosscutting events. The team earned second place in men’s crosscut, women’s bowsawing and men’s bowsawing.
Established in 1979, the Louisiana Forest Festival takes place in Winnfield, Louisiana, and celebrates the timber industry’s contributions to the state.
Notes
Thanks to the fine folks at the Louisiana Forest Festival in Winnfield, Louisiana for inviting the Sylvans to compete each year!
Competitions generally use lathed eastern white pine brought in by Mike Slingerland, with sizes apparent in the photos. Square wood is often sweetgum, but sometimes eastern white pine. Time starts with a signal rather than when the teeth of the saw move. Teams may enter either two women or two men in double-buck crosscut sawing, which changed starting 2022 with more women's events. A starter cut is used for single buck usually. Axe throw has more scoring rings than at Conclave. Competitors get four throws, top three count. Bowsaw (some years) is on a lower cant holder than Conclave. Scoring awards are inverse to placing (i.e. 3 points for first if there are three teams). Unlike Conclave, timing out earns no overall points, same as a did not compete. Otherwise rules are very similar to Conclave.
